Pixar
As I watch Wall-E for the first time, I realize just how far Pixar has come since their initial tale about Woody and Buz Lightyear.
DISCLAIMER: Pixar is a very private company that has a fifteen-foot iron fence around their property that they only open for employees and approved guests. With that said, I apologize for not being able to talk about anything directly, but take my word for granted when I say that cool stuff is on the way.
It’s refreshing to see a company that takes as much pride in its product as Pixar does. Pixar’s beautiful building of wood, brick, and steel is thoroughly decorated with production artifacts and compositions from their animated motion pictures. From small clay models to 15 by 30 foot hand painted murals, Pixar views their work not just as videos for children, but as complete works to be enjoyed by any individual. It may seem smug to hang your own works on the wall across from your desk, but I can validate that working amongst art can be the most inspirational part of your job. Pixar also has an array of amenities to unstress its workers right on site. Ping-pong, foosball, swimming pool, soccer field, walking trail, and movie theatre are just some of the benefits that Pixar offers right on its campus. Pixar goes to a lot of trouble to encourage creative thought, if companies tried half as hard as Pixar does, people would not become burned out in dead-end jobs, and might just look forward to going to work.
Going to Scarborough Fair

With four packed days of interviews, tours, and Q&A sessions, it's time to take a break. With no meetings on Saturday and Sunday, were gunna take some time to be tourists and go see the city. Although were not meeting with anyone over the weekend, I'll still be rolling out posts from earlier in the week.

To quote our first interviewee, Sara Lacy, “Luck is under rated.” Our host for this trip, @StephAgresta, threw a soirée this evening at the very swanky Clift Hotel in Downtown San Francisco. The party was designed for Stephanie to touch base with all her Silicon Valley friends, and at the same time giving us students a chance to network with some prominent figures in the Valley. Just as we were thinking of heading out somewhere to find some dinner, I caught the glimpse of a reasonably short woman that looked awfully familiar. This mystery guest turned out to be none other than Sarah Lane. For those of you who have never heard of Sarah Lane, she hosted a ,(now defunct) show on Revision3 called Pop Siren, and was apart of the show The Screen Savers on the, also defunct, TechTV network.

Well my tenure as a vegitarian has come to an end. After only 6 meals into my experiment, I fell to the temtations of a very delicious Indian restaurant in downtown Palo Alto, CA. The rare chance to have lamb in a restaurant and done right warrants a suspension of any diet, but I fell yet again at last night’s San Jose Sharks game. The combination of beer and a hot salty hotdog must have some kind of chemical attraction, because the moment I saw the foot long wieners roasting on the grill, I knew I was having one. So it is my suggestion that Oscar Meyer should merge with Budwieser or Miller. They are missing a golden opportunity.
A Tale of Two Cities

It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. US highway 101 bisects a stretch of land between San Jose and San Francisco known as Silicon Valley. About 10 miles out of San Jose, The 101 is the division between two towns called Mountain View (Google), and Cupertino (Apple), both companies couldn’t have been more different for only having a mile between them.
The attitudes of the companies could reflect their respectful ages, but I can’t help feeling that Google wants to save the world, where as Apple wants to rule it. Google’s mantra is to do no evil, and I whole-heartedly believe that. The last time I felt this trusting of a company, it was Hard Rock Café from the late 1990s, with their mantra of Love all Serve All.
